Wing-Chun Großmeister IP Man kommt nach San Francisco, um eine Schule für seinen Sohn zu finden und seinem Schüler Bruce Lee beim Aufbau eines Wing Chun-Trainingscenters zu unterstützen. Seine ungewöhnlichen Lehrmethoden sorgen für Anfeindungen von chinesischen und westlichen Martial Arts-Kämpfern. Besonders brutal geht dabei Barton vor, ein amerikanischer Marineoffizier, der die Auseinandersetzungen auf einen unausweichlichen Clash der Kampfkunst-Disziplinen zuspitzt: Welche Martial Arts-Form ist die überlegene? Welche Nation kann den Sieg davontragen?

Nachdem Ip Man im zweiten Sino-Japanischen Krieg seine Kampfkünste gegen die Japaner einsetzte, flüchtet er 1949 nach Hongkong und versucht dort, eine Wing Tsun-Schule zu etablieren. Als der mächtige Master Hung dies erfährt, stellt er Ip Man vor eine heikle Aufgabe. Dieser soll sich zunächst in einem Kampf auf Zeit gegen Kämpfer aller möglichen Stile den nötigen Respekt verdienen. Auch seitens eines korrupten Polizei-Intendants und dem britischen Box-Champion Twister droht weitere Gefahr. Für Ip Man geht es erneut um die Ehre des chinesischen Volks aber auch um die Möglichkeit, seine Kampfschule zu eröffnen.

The story starts off with Gam Sai Wai when he embarks on his journey to find Lui Sei Leong to get rid of the poison that is passed on by his master into his body. Sai Wai's master had died because of the poison and before his death, he had told Sai Wai to go find Lui Sei Leong because she can help him. During his journey, he makes friends with lots of people and meets two women who love him very much. The two women are Lai Shing Nam and Kuk Chi Wah. He also gets caught in the affairs of the martial arts world during his journey and keeps on helping the good people, especially Lai Shing Nam and Kuk Chi Wah to fight for justice until he becomes the hero without realizing it.

At the end of the Shang Dynasty, King Zhou's tyranny made life unbearable for the people. Li Jing, one of the dynasty's most renowned generals, and his wife Yin Shiniang, faced a strange event when their child was born as a ball of flesh. Believing it to be a demon, Li Jing split it open, revealing a two-year-old boy named Nezha. To protect her child, Shiniang sent Nezha to the Nuwa Temple to be raised. Nezha befriended Yang Jian and Lei Zhenzi, and the trio delved into the world of kung fu. Yang Jian's sister, Yang Lian Hua, fell in love with Nezha at first sight. Meanwhile, King Zhou's indulgence in beauty and favouritism towards Su Daji led to widespread destruction. Jiang Ziya then led Nezha, Lei Zhenzi, and Yang Jian to persuade King Wen and assist King Wu in leading an army against Zhou. Together, they fought against the injustice.
